“Bring the outside in and give me a big kitchen and a proper boot room” was Sarah Muirhead’s brief.
Working closely with the Planners and Conservation department who took some convincing we obtained Listed Building Consent for a contemporary glass room on the front of the Grade II listed Georgian former Rectory creating a large light filled family kitchen / dining / living space. Such is the pull of the space that it has become the heart of their beautiful home and one that her large family rarely leave. Sarah and her family now enjoy the beautiful views and Sarah no longer suffers from “boot room envy”. She says “It’s fantastic! The trouble is we don’t go anywhere else in the house now and look at my boot room.”
"Ivo and Jo asked us to take a look at the bungalow they had inherited from Ivo’s parents. They wondered if it could be turned into Jo’s dream, a large Victorian farmhouse. Six months later the project began.
We obtained planning permission to convert the 70’s bungalow into an impressive 5 bedroom family home along with planning permission to extend the garden into the countryside beyond and to establish a new access to the property from the road. The foundations needed under-pinning and natural stone replaced the façade. The footprint was extended upwards, the back of the bungalow became the front and Acorns became Acorn House.
Ivo and Jo say “From the very start we felt comfortable with David; he had some really good ideas and we felt that he understood exactly how we wanted it even when we couldn’t quite put it into words. The design is exactly what we wanted. The workmen are amazing, they work so hard and the workmanship is excellent across the board. For such a big job, with so many trades and different things to be done everything has been handled professionally and expertly. The breadth of skill across so many disciplines is outstanding.
"I wanted something a little different, something unlike any of the ones I had seen on the web or in brochures I had received. I spoke to other companies who basically offered me standard designs. David spent time talking to me, helping me to come up with a bespoke design which fits my home and garden perfectly and which is exactly what I wanted. Thank you David for your help and also many thanks are sent to your installation Team for working so hard and clearing up really well too. The communication was great and the workmanship faultless. It has made the best of the back of my house and I just love sitting out there with my family, grandchildren and little dog. Thanks again Whidown Design - a lovely firm to work with."
‘After deciding to replace our shabby timber and corrugated plastic veranda, we embarked on the search for a modern and stylish replacement. After meeting with many of the major suppliers reps, most extolling the virtues of precision German engineered systems with eye watering prices, we were on the verge of giving up. Then we chanced upon Whidown Design. David came to see us and after a thorough assessment of our requirements put together a quotation for both a veranda and glass balustrade. The price was fair and very competitive in comparison to the others we'd had. We went ahead and a few weeks after David and his foreman had undertaken a full site survey, the fitters were on site and the veranda was completed efficiently over 3 days. A month later the team were back and the balustrade installed.
We are delighted with the end product. David and his team were a pleasure to deal with and very consultative during the process. The work was completed to a high standard and the fitters who came to site were reliable, hard working and accommodating.
I'd have no hesitation recommending Whidown Design to anyone undertaking a similar project. ‘
